This is a partial list of local directories, history books, pamphlets, phone books, programs, etc. that we have in our collection. This list will be expanded as we get the chance, and new items will be added when we acquire them. This list starts out with items that have local information. The next group of items has items that were printed locally and may or may not have local interest. The last group, are items that have no local information, but they have some link, such as book plates, authorship, etc.. Catalogue of Allegheny College, 1860-61. Softbound, 36 pages, 2018 reprint by Forgotten Books, London, England. It lists, the current students, faculty, courses, terms, costs and fees, every degree conferred from 1817 to 1859, information of the Philo-Franklin Literary Society and other college societies, and more.

Allegheny College Annual Catalog 1888-’89, soft cover, 76 pages, printed in Meadville, Pa. by Tribune-Republican Job Rooms, 1889. It has very detailed information about the staff, history of the college, the courses offered, the campus, and calendar. It has a Register of Students, Officers of the College from 1817, Members of the Faculty, Alumni from 1821-1888, a list of people who have received Honorary Degrees, Post-Graduate Alumni, A.M. Pro Merito, summary and contents.

Allegheny College The College Bulletin, Series III, No. 2, July, 1904. Softbound, 19 pages, it has a large space dedicated to the death (at Spencer Hospital) of James Harding Montgomery, Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Allegheny College. It also has commencement information and other announcements.

Allegheny College The College Bulletin, Series XXVIII – Number I, January, 1929. Softbound, 32 pages, it is full of great pictures of all the buildings on campus with historical text.

The Allegheny College Bulletin CATALOG for the ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-FOURTH ACADEMIC YEAR 1938-1939. Published by the college, Meadville, Pa. March, 1939, softbound, 168 pages with a few illustrations.

Armitage, W. H., publisher, Meadville and Titusville Cities and Crawford County Directory 1897-98 in Three Parts (plus a map of the county that has an 1892 copyright). Part I (186 pages) is Meadville with the directory of residents, specialized directories, business directory, and ads. Part II (117 pages) is a directory of residents of the Townships and Boroughs of Crawford County with ads. Part III (118 pages) is Titusville with the directory of residents, specialized directories, business directory, and ads. It also has ads on the covers. This book was in the law library of Thomas Roddy, who is an attorney listed in the Meadville section. Total of 421 pages, printed in 1897 by Tribune-Republican Job Books, Meadville, PA.

Arters, Jno. M., (compiler – Meadville, Pa.), General Directory for The Oil Regions of Pennsylvania for 1872-73 – comprising a list of all residents, together with the advertisements of prominent business houses. The original book was published by Ashby & Vincent, Binders and Stationers, Erie Pa. 1872. This is a mimeographed copy of that book, in a ring-binder. It has a very large number of advertisements from businesses of the entire oil region.

Beautiful full-page illustrations of the machines and boring heads with test results, testimonials, and a long list of customers (with quite a few local companies) and general information. Printed in Cleveland by Corday & Gross, no date. Barrett Machine Tool Co. was located on Arch Street, Meadville, Pa.

Blooming Valley Centennial Committee, Centennial Blooming Valley 1867-1967. Softbound, 64 pages, nicely illustrated with vintage photographs, schedule of events with program details, lots of ads, no printer given.

Brooks, John, Three documents from the Court of Common Pleas of Crawford County – November 1816. One sheet is written out and signed on November 1, 1816, by John Brooks. John Brooks was one of the earliest settlers of Crawford County. Born in Ireland May 12, 1765 and arriving in the territory that would become Crawford County in 1794. He was a wheelwright, a merchant, a Major in the War of 1812, the first Justice of the Peace in the newly formed Crawford County, and appointed by Gov. Simon Snyder to Associate Judge of Crawford County in 1817, which he served for 14 years until his death, June 3, 1831. These three sheets are plain paper, all hand-written and detailing court costs.

A Complete Directory of Crawford County 1879-80, by cities, townships and boroughs, giving the name, residence, occupation and post office address of every citizen. Hardbound, 408 pages, also containing selected biographical sketches and an index. Originally printed by Press of the Crawford Journal, Meadville, Pa., October 1879, this is a reprint by Closson Press, Apollo, Pa., July 1998.

Crawford County Commissioners, Crawford County Court House Meadville Pennsylvania. Softcover, 24-page booklet, to commemorate the remodeling and enlarging of the Crawford County Courthouse. Contains a brief history of the county, a history of the courts and bar of the county with complete listing of the law judges who presided over the courts of the county, active practitioners of recent years, members of the bar presently presiding (1954) at Meadville, Titusville, Cambridge Springs, and Linesville. It’s loaded with pictures showing the offices of the courthouse and the people working there. Tribune Publishing Company, Meadville, Pa. 1954.

Crawford County Directory 1938 – 1939 – 1940. It lists all the townships of Crawford County, Pa. Each listing gives the name, address, acres, and value. There are lots of ads, including inside and outside the covers. C. S. Burke, publisher, Box 469 Napoleon, Ohio, 80 pages, softcover.

Crawford County Election Results 1883-1894 – This is a very large, 678-page hardbound ledger, that the county clerk recorded the official election results for all of the municipalities in Crawford County, Pa. except the cities of Meadville and Titusville. There is an index followed by all the election results for each year entered and signed by hand. This book, is a complete record of who held every elected local office in Crawford County, Pa. (including Evansburg and Vallonia) and who ran against them with the final vote totals (except Meadville and Titusville). In the image above, the ledger is opened to two pages showing the official results of special elections of Various School Districts and the City of Titusville (the only Titusville entry I found).

Unknown, CRAWFORD COUNTY. From the district of which Crawford County formed a part – Members of Congress; State Senators; Members of Assembly; Judges; District Attorneys; Sherriff; Prothonotary; Clerk of Courts; Register and Recorder; Treasurer; Commissioners; Coroners; Superintendent of Schools. Hardbound, 200 pages plus an index. It is professionally bound, but no printer/publisher is listed, no date, and no author listed. The pages are written by typewriter (probably mimeographed) with corrections and notes throughout the book, written by pen. It has extensive biographical information on the people listed in the various categories and it covers a time frame of late 1700s to just past 1900 (with biographical information going back into the 1500s and 1600s). If anyone can credit this book to anyone, please let us know.

This booklet not only gives detailed information about all the public schools of the county, but it has detailed statistics about Crawford County demographics, farm sizes, production of crops and animals, interesting ads, and much more. Here are three Eureka Springs, Saegertown, Pa. pamphlets. The left is 1885, the right is 1889, and the bottom one is after 1894.

Eureka Mineral Spring Co., Limited, Eureka Springs. Carbonated Chalybeate Natural Mineral Water – Saegertown, Pa. – For Sale by all Leading Druggists. Softcover, 44 pages with a few illustrations, 1855, this is the earliest pamphlet that we’ve found, and, it pre-dates the inn. Has: discovery of the springs; healing properties; village of Saegertown; Eureka Springs Park; analysis of the water; medical virtues; temperatures and costs of baths; costs of treatments at the springs; directions for using the mineral water; for saloon, hotel and table use; a change in color; ginger ale; Sanitarium completed; female diseases; rheumatism (plus eleven more diseases); physician’s testimonials; other testimonials; references, restaurants, hotels, grocers; price list of both mineral water and ginger ale (by the case and half case for quarts, pints, and 5 gallon cans); plus a few ads.

The soft cover is illustrated inside and out and has the stamp of the business that gave out the pamphlet: M.L. Hackedorn & Bro. Drugs, Meadville PA. Forty pages (plus the illustrated covers), 1889, Eureka Mineral Springs Co., Limited, Saegertown, PA. This is probably the first pamphlet issued by this business after the inn was added.

Eureka Springs Hotel and Mineral Water pamphlet – The cover says: Eureka Springs Hotel Health and Pleasure, Saegertown, PA. The title page says: The Eureka Chalybeate Springs Natural Mineral Water, Saegertown, PA, The Most Remarkable Iron Water Ever Discovered, etc. Chapters include: Saegertown, PA., Hotel and Sanitarium, Bath Houses, Treatment of Patients, Suggestions, The Eureka Springs Waters (including analysis of both the Chalybeate Spring and the De Profundis Spring, Eureka Ginger Ale, Testimonials and References. Illustrated with photos, 29 pages. Not dated (the latest testimonial date I found in this pamphlet, is 1894) and no publisher listed. This may be the second pamphlet this company issued after the inn was built.

Hoober, Richard T., Pennsylvania Obsolete Notes and Scrip. This book attempts to “describe all known notes and scrip issued in Pennsylvania from the termination of the colonial period through the 19th century.” It addresses rarity and value, counterfeit and altered notes, and is a very comprehensive book. Hardbound, 390 pages, published by The Society of Paper Money Collectors, Inc., 1985. (We use this along with Haxby’s Volume 4.)

The Hotel Rider, The Hotel Rider, Cambridge Springs, Pa. A promotional pamphlet, single sheet folded to provide a cover and two inside pages. The front cover has an illustration of the hotel, the back cover has an illustration of the Rider Springs Pavilion. The inside two pages have a detailed description of the rates, the waters, the “General Appointments”, no date or publisher given.

Lytle, John Horace, Advertising Media and Copy. The first 60 pages is dedicated to magazine advertising. The rest of the book is dedicated to newspaper advertising, and it uses the story of the Dayton, Ohio actual advertising campaign, for the successful promotion of Saegertown Ginger Ale. It gives details, and shows pictures some of the Saegertown Ginger Ale newspaper ads. Hardbound, 83 pages, published by Press of United Brethren Publishing House (The Otterbein Press), W.R. Riesenman, Joseph, Jr., History of Northwestern Pennsylvania. Comprising the counties of Erie, Crawford, Mercer, Venango, Warren, Forest, McKean, Elk, Jefferson, Cameron, and Clearfield. Three volumes total; the first two volumes, with 1,269 pages, relates the history. The third volume of 628 pages, is all biographies. There are a lot of great pictures to go along with this comprehensive text. These three large volumes are hardbound, published by the Lewis Historical Publishing Company, Inc., New York, 1943.

T. A. Robinson & Son Ledger and 1938 Meadville Area Telephone Book.

Robinson, Thomas, A. & Son. This is a very large, hardbound, leather covered, 692-page ledger book for T. A. Robinson & Son, Sheakleyville, Pa. At the front of the ledger, there is a paper glued inside the front flyleaf, hand-written: Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Sheakleyville County of Mercer – being a full-page statement, avowing the truth of the ledger’s content – dated and signed by T. A. Robinson and C. J. Bell, Justice of the Peace, 18th day of December, AD 1884. The blank opposite page, has written in ink: “M(?)s. T. A. Robinson & Son Ledger March 22nd, 1879.” There are tabbed pages in the front of the ledger, with the letters of the alphabet, where customers’ names are entered with the page number where their entries can be found. The earliest entry is 1879 and the latest one I can find is 1916, with most of the entries in the 1880’s. There was a small form statement sheet inserted that said: “STATEMENT – Sheakleyville, Pa. Dec. 22, 1885. To Cochran & Robinson, Assignees of T. A. Robinson & Son.” It was used to adjust someone’s account.

Saegertown (presents), Centennial Review June 10, 1949 8:00 p.m., Play Programme (sic): “The following scenes presented are a few of the historical events that marked the growth of Saegertown.” Softcover, 4 pages, seven scenes, Program Committee, the many participants are listed, Centennial Sponsors, no location or publisher is given.

Saegertown Inn pamphlet – Frank M. Fox & Co. Proprietors. The cover is shaped like an envelope and it has 16 pages with lots of pictures. There is no date, but it has a picture and information about the Commodore Perry related powder wagon reproduction that stopped at the inn in 1913. It also compares the number of guests during their first year to the number of guests for the 1915-16 season.

No author given, The Lake Souvenir – Conneaut Lake, All Around It, All About It 1902. Softbound booklet reprint, 86 pages with lots of advertising throughout and inside the covers. It is loaded with great pictures and has very detailed local history. An original booklet was given to the Conneaut Lake Historical Society by Brian Myers of Conneaut Lake, Pa. The reprint was sold to raise funds for the Historical Society. This was originally published in 1902 by McCoy & Calvin Printers and Publishers (FINE ILLUSTRATED CATALOG PRINTING OUR SPECIALTY). It doesn’t give a reprint date or mention who reprinted it.

Emma Collum Cortazzo, was born in Meadville, Pa. Jan. 31, 1842 as Emma Collum Huidekoper, daughter of Alfed Huidekoper, granddaughter of Harm Jan Huidekoper. This book is a mixture of letters and journal entries during her seven journeys to Europe between 1868 to 1881.

Bates, Samuel P., Battle of Chancellorsville, Hardbound (rebound), 261 pages, printed by Wm. Butter & Co., Philadelphia, Pa. 1882. This was written by one of Meadville’s prominent residents.

Bates, Samuel P., Lectures of Mental and Moral Culture (1859). The title page says: By Samuel P. Bates, A.M., Superintendent of Public Instruction, Crawford County Pennsylvania. Hardbound, the first 319 pages are the lectures, then: Method of Teachers’ Institutes, and the Theory of Education (1862), 75 pages, followed by 43 pages of book ads from A.S. Barnes & Company. Published by A.S. Barnes & Company, New York and Chicago, 1869.

Bigland, J., History of England, from the Earliest Period, to the Close of the Year 1812. Hardbound leather in two separate volumes. Volume one is 496 pages, volume two is 514 pages. Published by Richardson, Boston; and Eastburn, Kirk & Co. New-York, 1815. Inside the front cover on both volumes, they have three bookplates. One says: Class no. and Book no. LIBRARY OF THE MEADVILLE THEOLOGICAL SCHOOL Accession No. The second bookplate says: JOHN P. PLAIN NEW YORK. The third bookplate says: MEADVILLE THEOLOGICAL SCHOOL PRESENTED BY JOSHUA BROOKES, NEW-YORK. On the title page are punched dot letters, that say: Library of the Meadville Theological School. Also, on the title page, they both have two different rubber stamps that say Meadville Theological School.

Wakefield, Priscilla, Instinct Displayed, in a Collection of Well-Authenticated Facts, Exemplifying The Extraordinary Sagacity of Various Species of The Animal Creation. Hardbound, 335 pages, stated: First American from the second London edition, Flagg & Gould printers, Boston, 1816. This book has a bookplate inside the front cover from the Library of the Meadville Female Seminary.
