Chesebrough Vaseline Oil bottle.
Chesebrough Vaseline Oil of Petroleum bottle – see text below.

Chesebrough Vaseline Oil of Petroleum bottle- SPECIAL RELATED ITEM. Robert Chesebrough was born in London, England on January 9, 1837. He was raised in New York City and after a long life, died in Spring Lake, New Jersey on September 8, 1933. He was a chemist who began his career working with whale oil. When he realized that petroleum oil was replacing whale oil, he visited Titusville, Pa. to investigate the possibilities. He was told about the rod wax that was a nuisance on the oil wells. The only redeeming feature was that when this substance was smeared on cuts, it helped speed the healing process. He found a process to produce this substance, known as petroleum jelly in the lab. In 1859 he founded the Chesebrough Manufacturing Company which produced and marketed petroleum jelly under the brand name Luxor. He applied for a U.S. patent in 1872, naming his product Vaseline. The original Cheesebrough Manufacturing Company also experimented with and marketed other oil products for medicinal use. – The bottle shown above has CHESEBROUGH MAN’FT’G CO NEW YORK & LONDON embossed vertically on the body of the bottle, opposite the paper label. The paper label says: Trade Vaseline OIL OF PETROLEUM – A liquid preparation especially adapted for use in atomizer or syringe. CHESEBROUGH MANUFACTURING CO. (consolidated) NEW YORK, U.S.A. Made in U.S.A. Our Trade Mark VASELINE is registered in (MISSING) Patent Office and in most of the principal countries (MISSING) world. – It is 6 inches tall, 2 1/4 inches in diameter and is designed to accept a cork. There is still about 1 5/8 inches of product in the bottle (allowing for the thickness of the bottom). A cork stoppered bottle of this age, normally wouldn’t have any surviving liquid product, but someone broke off the top of the cork and sealed it with wax.
