When I moved to Saegertown, I couldn’t understand why some people in the local area called the town Saegerstown. I looked up the history and couldn’t find any reference to Saegerstown, but some people still insisted on referring to it as Saegerstown. Eventually, I found out, that when the town received its cancellation equipment from the postal system, it was misspelled Saegerstown and continued to be misspelled every time they updated the equipment. So, when anyone received mail from Saegertown, the cancellation marks always read Saegerstown. Finally, in 1956, they got it right. The last day envelope shown above, shows that change.

Here is a Saegertown Mineral Springs Company envelope. It has a misspelled cancellation mark: SAGERSTOWN, PA. APR. 22, 2 PM 1899.
